When initially established in 1810, the Bethel Burying Ground was a suburban cemetery. Rev. Richard Allen and the trustees of Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church purchased the modest plot in the 400 block of Queen Street as a cemetery where African American Philadelphians could receive the proper burial that was being denied them throughout the city. Active from 1810 to 1864 the remains of thousands of Black pioneers are interred beneath a part of Weccacoe Playground. The following are some of the stories of those who have Queen Street as their final resting place.
