Rocks and Nails: The Carpenters’ Company and Religious Buildings in Old Philadelphia

November 13 @ 7:00 pm 8:30 pm

History lovers will enjoy this talk about the Carpentersʼ Company as an institution, trade guild and professional organization. Alex Palma, Assistant Director of Carpentersʻ Hall, will discuss the Companyʼs role in building the religious landscape of colonial and early federal Philadelphia. Members of the Carpentersʼ Company are known to have been major contributors to the woodwork in Gloria Dei, for example – in both the Philadelphia Church and the earlier Church in Wilmington. Additionally, members of the Company worked on St. Josephʼs Catholic Church, the steeple of Christ Church and the Arch Street Meeting House. Alex will also touch on some of the preservation work being done on these churches and other churches in Old Philadelphia by Carpenters’ Company member firms.

This free event will take place in the church sanctuary, followed by a reception in Riverside Hall. For a modest donation, enjoy gourmet cheesecake by a local pastry chef, paired with muscato wine, coffee or tea.
