Elfreth’s Alley Hosts its September First Friday Program, Barbarous Barbering

September 1 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Elfreth’s Alley will continue to host its First Friday “Bits & Bites of History Series” on September 1st with an evening of Barbarous Barbering which will include a discussion by Duke Dunne of Old City’s Bloke’s Barbershop & Gentleman’s Emporium as well as small savory bites provided by Fishtown’s Cake Life Bake Shop. This event has been rescheduled from August 4th, 2017.

Bits & Bites of History is an opportunity to visit the Elfreth’s House Museum and learn Bits of American Social History and perhaps engage in a refreshment in a relaxed atmosphere during Old City District’s First Fridays. Admission to the event is free.

Guests will experience an 18th century barber experience, which would traditionally have provided a variety of dental and medical services as well. Some services were gruesome and would be inconceivable today. Tooth removal, leeching, delousing, enemas and even limb removal were among the services provided, sometimes aided by generous quantities of gin.
